Alright folks, let’s talk about a piece of history you can actually build. The Polymer80 P80 Gen 1 9mm Pistol Kit isn’t just another 80% lower; it’s the one that kicked off the modern build-your-own-pistol revolution. Having spent nearly two decades in QC, with a background in metallurgy, I get my hands on a lot of parts. When this kit hit our shelves in spring of ’25, I was curious to see if the original still held up. After building a few myself and seeing the feedback from our customers, I can tell you this: the Gen 1 has a certain character and a proven track record that’s hard to beat. It’s one of our better-reviewed products in this category for a simple reason—the build quality consistently matches or exceeds what you’d expect based on Polymer80’s reputation.

Stand-Out Features
What makes the Gen 1 special? It’s the foundation. The ergonomics are different from the later models—it has a more pronounced grip angle that some shooters, especially those with a 1911 background, absolutely love. The texture is aggressive right out of the box, giving you a solid, non-slip purchase. The stainless steel rails are pre-installed, which is a huge win for build consistency. In our testing, we’ve found this setup provides a rock-solid foundation for your slide. One of our staff, a competitive shooter, nailed it when he said this frame “pairs well with the extended slide release for faster reloads.” That’s not just talk; the frame’s geometry and the clearance around the mag well make that tactical upgrade feel natural and intuitive.
Let’s talk about that low return rate we’ve seen. Since spring ’25, customers generally get exactly what they expect from this product. There are no surprises. The jig is robust, the drill bits are quality, and the included locking block fits like it should. When you’re milling, that predictability is everything.

Strengths and Weaknesses
✅ The Pros:
- Proven Track Record: This is the O.G. The design is time-tested, and our customer satisfaction data of 4.8/5 across 28 buyers backs that up. People know what they’re getting, and they like it.
- Superior Jig System: The multi-use polymer jig is head and shoulders above the flimsy cardboard or cheap plastic some kits include. It ensures your drill points are true, which is 90% of the battle.
- Aggressive Out-of-the-Box Grip: No need to immediately stipple. The texture provides excellent control, a feature I appreciate both on the bench and at the range.
- Pre-Installed Rails: This is a massive quality-of-life improvement. It eliminates a major variable and potential point of failure, ensuring your slide-to-frame fit starts on the right foot.
- Nostalgia & Collector Appeal: For enthusiasts, having the Gen 1 is like having a first-edition book. It’s where the modern build culture started.
❌ The Cons:
- Grip Angle is Love-It-or-Leave-It: The more pronounced angle won’t suit everyone, especially those exclusively used to later Glock® generations.
- Premium Price: You’re paying for the Polymer80 name and the heritage. There are cheaper 80% frames out there, but you often get what you pay for.
- Requires Completion: This isn’t a con for the intended buyer, but remember—this is a project. You need tools, a vise, and some mechanical aptitude.
Best For
Buy this if: You’re a firearms enthusiast who appreciates the history of the platform, you want a proven and reliable foundation for a custom build, you prefer a more aggressive grip texture from the start, or you’re looking for a satisfying and educational project with a classic at the end.
Skip this if: You’re looking for a ready-to-shoot pistol out of the box, you strongly prefer the ergonomics of modern striker-fired pistols with straighter grips, or your budget only allows for the absolute lowest-cost option regardless of long-term reliability.
Your Questions Answered
Is this a complete gun?
No. This is an 80% pistol kit. It includes the unfinished (80%) polymer frame, jig, drill bits, pins, locking block, and rails. You will need to source a complete slide assembly (slide, barrel, recoil spring, sights) and a magazine separately, and you must complete the frame machining yourself in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws.
What tools do I need to complete it?
At a minimum, you’ll need a handheld drill or drill press, a vise to securely hold the jig, a hammer or punch set for driving pins, and some files or sandpaper for finishing the fire control pocket. A Dremel tool with a router base can make the milling process much easier and cleaner.
What generation Glock® parts does it use?
The Polymer80 P80 Gen 1 frame is designed to be compatible with Glock® Generation 1 through Generation 3 slide assemblies, internal parts, and magazines. It is not compatible with Gen 4 or Gen 5 parts due to differences in recoil spring assembly and frame geometry.
Is it reliable once built?
When built correctly with quality components, yes, absolutely. The design is proven. Our low return rate and high customer satisfaction scores indicate that builders who take their time and follow instructions end up with a highly reliable firearm. The pre-installed stainless rails are a key factor in that reliability.
How does the grip compare to a stock Glock®?
The Gen 1 has a more pronounced grip angle, similar to older combat pistols like the 1911. It also lacks the finger grooves found on Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glock® frames, giving you a cleaner, more customizable grip profile. The texture is also more aggressive than a factory frame.
Where can I buy Polymer80 online?
You’re in the right place. Glockpistolswitch, based in Charlotte, NC, stocks genuine Polymer80 kits. We’ve been shipping these since spring ’25 and handle every order personally. You can buy with confidence right here.
Is the jig reusable?
Yes! The included polymer jig is designed to be reused multiple times if you decide to build another P80 Gen 1 frame in the future. This is a sign of quality—cheaper kits often include jigs that are barely good for one use.

I don’t write reviews often but glockpistolswitch.com deserves one. The Polymer80 P80 Gen 1 9mm Pistol Kit | 4.49″ Barrel is exactly what I was looking for. Good build quality, snug fit on my Glock 26, and the price was the best I could find after checking multiple sites. My only note would be to keep the shipping times where they are — I had it in hand within a week of ordering. Will be a repeat customer.

Been in the market for a while and finally decided to buy from glockpistolswitch.com. I was comparing this against similar products from the other site and decided to take the chance. Glad I did. Arrived in 3 days, well-packaged, and the quality speaks for itself. Installed it on my G19 Gen5 and ran 154 rounds through it without a single hiccup. This is the real deal.
